Bon Jovi: After the Success -- The CDNOW Interview (Rock) -- on Video!

"'You Give Love a Bad Name' was a quintessential pop song for a 25-year-old kid to write," reflects Jon Bon Jovi on his biggest hit. "How much more fun could I possibly have? But I wouldn't write that for you now; I'm 38 years old."

Artists Coalition, Recording Industry Settle Copyright Dispute

Aug 9, 2000, 1:00 pm PT

Sheryl Crow
The Artists Coalition, consisting of such big names as Sheryl Crow and Don Henley, has come to an agreement with the U.S. recording industry over the reclaiming of ownership of master tapes 35 years after the music's release.

Several artists launched a campaign before Congress in May of this year to stop an effort to change copyright laws from allowing artists to reclaim their master tapes after 35 years. In an amendment passed in November 1999 by Congress, sound recordings were designated "works for hire," making them the property of the employer -- in this case the record label -- as imposed to the employee -- the artist. The change could have costs artists millions of dollars.

Crow, Henley, Billy Joel, and Jimmy Buffett all spoke out vehemently against the amendment and have now come to terms with the Recording Industry Association of America on the issue. The RIAA has agreed to recommend either removing the inclusion of sound recordings as one of the categories of works for hire or to completely remove the original amendment itself from the books.

"This shows what artists can do if we are willing to stand together to protect our interests," said Henley in a statement released on Wednesday (Aug. 9).

ELLIOT SMITH
Figure 8 (Dreamworks)

Rating: 5 out of 7 By Rob O' Connor

August 27, 2000,

Do you like the Beatles? Do you write songs? Does your voice sound a bit like Nick Drake (the guy you now hear singing "Pink Moon" in a VW commercial)? Well, then, you must be Elliot Smith.
Having figured out he was wasting his time sharing the spotlight with his band Heatmiser once his four track recordings began attracting more attention, Smith has since entered real studios and lined up with producers Rothrock and Schnapf (Beck, Richard Thompson) for his latest.
Unlike XOXO, which sounded like Smith being overwhelmed by the professional polish, Figure 8 settles into a modest groove. No great surprises. Anyone familiar with his Beatle-influenced melodicism will recognize the lazy sway of "Junk Bond Trader" or the winsome longing of "Everything Reminds Me Of Her." There are nice ornamental touches here and there--a baroque keyboard, a punchy horn. One of these days the boy's gonna make a White Album all by himself.

Diana Ross & The Supremes Tour Is In Trouble

July 10, 2000, 3:10 pm PT

Diana Ross
Is the Diana Ross & the Supremes tour on or off? It depends on who you ask. And at the moment it appears to be a showdown battle.

Diana Ross has issued a statement concerning the cancellation of her tour's remaining 14 shows, claiming the shows have been pulled by the promoter, SFX. However, SFX told allstar that they only canceled three shows -- Jones Beach in New York (July 7), MCI Center in Washington, D.C. (July 9), and the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh (July 10); ticket sales were reportedly low.

SFX says the July 12 show at Hartford's Civic Center is still on. Still, there is no denying that the tour has not done well at the box office. At the tour's Columbus, Ohio stop on June 20, for instance, there were only around 3,000 people in the 22,000-seat arena.

But it may just come down to a showdown of wits. With Ross guaranteed between $15-$20 million for the tour, it could turn out to be a poker game: How much money will SFX owe Ross? If Ross pulls out of the tour, she would not get as much as if SFX shut it down.

The tour seemed doomed from the start, beginning with a press Conference in New York to announce the tour, which received negative media coverage because the tour, conceptualized as a reunion tour, did not have original Supremes members Mary Wilson or Cindy Birdsong. Wilson went on the interview circuit and on national TV denouncing the Supremes being falsely represented since Ross's lineup featured no original members and no members of the group from Ross' tenure.

Here is Ross' statement:

I am severely disappointed that TNA and SFX have decided to cancel the remainder of the Diana Ross & the Supremes Tour -- A Celebration of Music, I was very much looking forward to performing for our fans. The reactions to the performances to date have been incredible. We have received several standing ovations, in every city to which we've performed.

I promised our fans I would be there for them. I know the canceled shows would have [been] received with the same enthusiasm that we encountered in every city on the tour so far. We have had fantastic audiences that have been extremely excited about the music and reliving their memories.

I would sing the same if there were 10 people in the audience or 10,000. I live the music and the fans, and I will find a way to reconnect with them as soon as possible.

The tour's last date is listed as Aug. 5 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden.
